Florida Educational Leadership Exam

The Florida Educational Leadership Exam is comprised of three subtests. Subtest 3 includes the FELE written response / written performance assessment.  You must pass both the multiple-choice and FELE written response sections to pass Subtest 3.

The FELE written response is probably the one part of the Florida Educational Leadership Exam that intimidates candidates the most.  FELE Prep offers a FELE exam study guide that includes FELE practice questions for the multiple-choice section of Subtest 3 and another that offers guidance on the FELE written response.  We also offer a sample written performance assessment.

Below are some strategies to keep in mind when taking the Florida Educational Leadership Exam written performance assessment:

  • Read the data carefully and make sure you have a thorough and comprehensive understanding of it. This is extremely important so be sure to read it several times if you need to.
  • Create a topic sentence using information from the question and then accurately and thoroughly explain the data.
  • Your FELE written response should be targeted toward the audience who will be reading your question. Review your response from the perspective of those who will be evaluating it.

Preparing for the Florida Educational Leadership Exam is much like preparing for any standardized test.  As educators, we are knowledgeable in helping students prepare for tests and exams.  However, these strategies are often easier to discuss with our students than apply ourselves.

Plan a FELE Test Prep Strategy

Just like you would with any large project, consider outlining a formal FELE test prep strategy.  You should give yourself several months to study for the Florida Educational Leadership Exam as learning and reviewing the material over a longer period of time is generally more effective.  Decide on which FELE resources you plan to utilize and come up with a realistic study routine and timeline.  For instance, you may want to immerse yourself in FELE study materials, FELE written response / FELE essay examples, and FELE practice questions during the course of your entire study plan.  You may then want to augment these with a FELE test prep course/FELE seminar and perhaps even some FELE tutoring.  You may also decide to utilize FELE flashcards a few weeks prior to the exam.  The key is developing a FELE test prep strategy that works for you.

Keep Studying

The more you study and immerse yourself in the FELE test prep materials, the more familiar you will be with both the test format and content you will need to know to pass all three FELE subtests.

Have Confidence in Yourself

Most importantly, have confidence in yourself.  Half the battle of passing any standardized test is having the confidence that you can and will succeed!

Visual or Auditory Learner?

Your learning style can help you determine which Florida FELE resources to consider.  If you are a visual learner, our self-study guides may be most beneficial.  Our downloadable review guides include FELE essay examples, FELE practice questions and test taking strategies for each of the subtests.

If you are more of an auditory learner, you may want to complement these self-study guides with one of our FELE seminars. FELE flashcards are also a great resource for auditory learners because a friend or family member can use them to help quiz you on key terms and theorists.

Self, Group or One-On-One?

Our Florida FELE resources include options for self, group or one-on-one preparation.  If you find independent studying to be most beneficial, then our FELE self-study guides that include FELE essay examples and FELE practice questions may be all you need. 

If you work better in a group setting, you can complement the self-study guides with one of our FELE seminars, which is essentially a one-day intensive FELE prep course.  During this FELE prep course, we work on FELE practice questions and also cover the written performance section of the test, including going over FELE essay examples and discussing how to formulate a passing FELE written response.

If one-on-one preparation works best for you, then our FELE tutoring via Skype may be an option to consider.  FELE tutoring sessions are conducted by Dr. Lynette Fields and cover much of the same material as the FELE prep course, including going through the self-study guides and discussing how to prepare a passing FELE written response for the essay portion of the exam.

Test Taking Tips for the Florida Educational Leadership Exam

Anyone seeking to become a school administrator in the state of Florida must pass the  Florida Educational Leadership Exam (FELE).  Just like any standardized test, there are certain strategies you can use to help improve your performance on the FELE.

Read the Entire Question

Although this might seem obvious, sometimes the anxiety or excitement of taking the FELE can result in not reading the entire question.  Try to remain composed and read each question and answer all the way through before making your choice.

Eliminate Answers You Know Are Incorrect

Taking answers you know are incorrect off the table helps ease some anxiety.  Once you narrow down the choices that are obviously incorrect, then look for clues within the remaining selections that will help lead you to the answer.

Consider Your First Impression

In many cases, your first impression is the correct answer. Test anxiety can sometimes lead to over analysis.  Don’t overanalyze and try to go with your gut.

Florida Educational Leadership Exam Scoring

Let’s take a look at how the Florida Educational Leadership Exam is scored.  There are three sections you must pass:  FELE Subtest 1, FELE Subtest 2 and FELE Subtest 3, which now includes both a multiple choice section and a written performance section. 

FELE scores are scaled, meaning that your raw score (total number of correct answers) is converted to allow multiple forms of the test to share a minimum passing score.  You must achieve a scaled score of at least 200 to pass Subtest 1 and Subtest 2.  The requirement to pass Subtest 3 is a minimum scaled score of 200 on the multiple choice section and seven out of 12 points on the written performance section. 

Remember, you need to pass all three sections of the Florida Educational Leadership Exam.  We’ve broken out our FELE study materials to address each of the different FELE Subtests. Class Size

Our intensive, one-day FELE seminars accommodate eight to ten people.  We keep the class size small enough for personalized attention, but large enough for group collaboration.  When it comes to preparing for the FELE test, we find there are many students who prefer to prepare within a collaborative environment.

FELE Exam Study Guide

FELE Practice Test
